Student Health Insurance

It is Cornell University policy that all students have quality health insurance coverage that supports their health, well-being, and ability to participate fully in the Cornell experience.

To ensure that students have adequate insurance, full-time registered students are automatically enrolled each year in Cornell’s Student Health Plan (SHP), which provides excellent coverage on campus, in the Ithaca community, and anywhere in the world. (Exception: some students may be eligible for SHP-Medicaid.)

Eligible students who can demonstrate that they have alternate health insurance that meets Cornell’s requirements may apply to waive their enrollment in SHP (Fall 2018 waiver application deadline: July 31). Students who waive SHP pay a Student Health Fee that gives them access to care at Cornell Health, and helps support campus health initiatives.
