MSE 5550 - Introduction to Composite Materials Spring. 3 credits. Letter grades only.
Prerequisite: MAE 2120 or ENGRD 2610 /MSE 2610 .
E. Donnelly.
Provides an introduction to the structure, properties, processing, and design of composite materials. Topics include introduction to composite materials; structure, properties, and processing of reinforcement and matrix materials; materials selection in design of composite materials; micromechanics of stiffness and load transfer in continuous and discontinuous fiber/matrix arrays; anisotropic elasticity applied to lamina and to parallel fibers in a matrix; macromechanical theory of stiffness (tension, bending, torsion); and failure of laminates and composite plates. Applications will be emphasized throughout the course in student presentations.
Outcome 1: Students will have a broad understanding of composite materials and mechanics with enough depth that they can function quickly in an industrial setting where composite materials are used, including structural design and manufacturing aspects.
Outcome 2: Have expertise in a specific application integrating many aspects, including safety and reliability and economic.
