NS 4410 - Nutrition and Disease


     
Fall, Summer. 4 credits. Student option grading.

Prerequisite: NS 3200  or equivalent (can be taken concurrently with permission of the instructor). Recommended Prerequisite: NS 1150 .

This course presents the role of nutrition in disease using review of the current literature and application to clinical cases. Students use their foundational knowledge in the sciences to understand the etiology and pathophysiology of disease states and learn where nutrition plays a critical role in the development, prevention, and/or management of disease. Application of knowledge to case studies is emphasized to develop skills in integrating nutrition into the assessment and management of acute illness and chronic medical conditions.

Outcome 1: Show a working knowledge of the etiology, pathophysiology, and altered metabolism that occurs in various disease states.

Outcome 2: Identify and explain the role of specific nutrients in the pathophysiology of various disease states.

Outcome 3: Explain the evidence-base for nutrition recommendations and practice guidelines for specific diseases.

Outcome 4: Appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of nutrition research.

Outcome 5: Develop skills in evaluation of nutrition-related clinical case studies.

Outcome 6: Strengthen skills in oral communication of scientific information and collaborative small group work across differences.
