VTMED 5603 - Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery Service/Small Animal Orthopedic Surgery Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer. 2 credits. S/U grades only.
Enrollment limited to: third- and fourth-year veterinary students. Required component of Clinical Rotations (Foundation Course VI).

This rotation exposes student to the practice of both soft tissue and orthopedic surgery under hospital conditions. Students participate in office hours; diagnostic techniques; planning of therapy, daily care of dogs and cats under the direction of an intern, surgical residents in training, and faculty. Students assist experienced surgeons in the operating room. Client communications and the basics of practice are emphasized. Students are expected to be able to successfully perform an orthopedic examination and localize the lameness by the end of the rotations. On soft tissue, students are expected to be able to formulate appropriate diagnostic, surgical, and post operative management plans for common soft tissue procedures by the end of the rotation.
