VTMED 5520 - Diagnostic Imaging

Spring. 2 credits. Letter grades only.

Prerequisite: VTMED 5510 . Enrollment limited to: third- year veterinary students.

E. Epperly.

Diagnostic imaging is an integral part of the management of clinical veterinary patients; from screening for breeding selection or racing prospects, to diagnosis of disease, to evaluation of therapeutic interventions. While there are multiple modalities available, the majority of imaging studies performed are radiographs (70% or more) and ultrasound examinations; these modalities will be the focus of the course. Currently, most veterinary diagnostic imaging studies are interpreted by general practitioners, not specialized radiologists.  As such, this course exists to train veterinary students for success at the level of the general practitioner. This is an 8 week course consisting of weekly lectures, labs, and imaging case file study. These activities will include large and small animal patients and are designed to optimize the students’ development of visual pattern recognition, retention of material, and ability to correctly interpret imaging findings in light of clinical presentation.
