CEE 4590 - Sustainable Environmental Technology for Remediation and Resources Recovery

Spring. 3 credits. Letter grades only.

Prerequisite or corequisite: CEE 4565  for Environmental Engineering students.

A. Gu.

Course considers sustainable technologies for environmental remediation, treatment, and resources and energy recovery. It will include municipal water treatment methods that are also applicable to remediation of municipal water, groundwater, storm water, industrial and agricultural wastewater and other water sources, as well as green technologies for storm water management and reuse, sustainable and low carbon energy and resource conversions, and other technologies relevant to environmental processes.  Student teams create a design for a selected technology that solves a problem and meets the regulatory requirements for a client. The capstone design projects are provided by the instructor or by industrial partners and may vary depending on the instructor. Design teams are advised by a faculty member and engineering practitioners. Integrates project design with further development of student communications skills; students present the design to practicing engineers and interested parties such as community groups.

Outcome 1: Ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.

Outcome 2: Ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.

Outcome 3: Ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.

Outcome 4: Ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.

Outcome 5: Ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
