DEA 3050 - Construction Documentation: CAD and BIM

Spring. 3 credits. Letter grades only.

Prerequisite: DEA 1150 with B- or higher, or permission of instructor. Enrollment preference given to: DEA undergraduate majors.

A continuous dialogue between the idea for an interior space and the reality of its final built form is contained within construction documents, also known as working drawings and specifications. Students study the history of architectural documentation, the organization of construction drawings, schedules, and specifications, and the detailing of interior elements and construction. Each student completes a comprehensive set of construction documents. Student must be experienced with AutoCad.

Outcome 1: Introduce formats, components, and accepted standards required for an integrated and comprehensive set of interior construction documents.

Outcome 2: Provide context for understanding the layers of information contained in construction
documentation and their interrelationship with base building construction and systems.

Outcome 3: Develop two-dimensional drawing interpretation skills and explore how they correspond to three-dimensional elements in the built environment.

Outcome 4: Gain exposure to construction document requirements of the NCIDQ and ARE.

Outcome 5: Produce construction documentation for a small interior project to gain experience in modeling, detailing, and scheduling. Autodesk REVIT (BIM software) will be introduced in class through a series of hands-on activities.

Outcome 6: Introduce the conceptual basis of BIM (Building Information Modeling) and its role in
contemporary practice.
