A comprehensive introduction to the labor relations systems of the United States and other countries. Covers the determinants of bargaining power, the process of labor agreement negotiation and administration, and assessment of the effects that collective representation exerts on economic and social outcomes. Special consideration is given to the increasing importance of new technology and international factors including global supply chains.
Outcome 1: Contrast the theoretical perspectives of labor and employment relations.
Outcome 2: Analyze the sources of union and management bargaining power.
Outcome 3: Understand the influence of economic, social, and political pressures on labor and employment relations.
Outcome 4: Evaluate the efficacy of current labor laws.
Outcome 5: Experience the analytical, emotional, and cognitive aspects of bargaining a collective agreement.
Outcome 6: Understand the dynamics of negotiations and conflict resolution.
Outcome 7: Assess evidence regarding the impact of collective bargaining on workplace and societal outcomes.
Outcome 8: Debate effectively the role and effects of unions in the public and private sectors.
