Agriculture is an exciting and dynamic field involving a wide range of disciplines. The Agricultural Sciences major trains students to be broad thinkers who are scientifically skilled and knowledgeable about socioeconomic issues related to agriculture and the environment. This interdisciplinary program is for students pursuing a general education in agriculture to prepare for a variety of careers requiring broad knowledge of food production systems. Employment examples include agricultural lending, marketing; research, sales, or production of plant/animal foods; agricultural education, nonprofit or government work. The Agricultural Sciences program offers flexibility, providing students with choices among focused course categories. Students work with their advisor to design a curriculum that best fits individual needs. Additionally, students focus in one or more concentration areas, gaining a deeper knowledge that complements course breadth.
All students are required to take core courses in sustainable agriculture, soil, crop, and animal sciences, and integrated pest management, as well as gain practical experience through an internship aligning with individual goals. Concentrations requiring at least 12 credits are available in Animal Science, Business, Crop Production and Management, Education and Communication, and Sustainable Agriculture.
Students graduating with an Agricultural Sciences major will be trained to address current, complex global agricultural issues. Graduates offer a strong foundation of agricultural knowledge leading to employment in a variety of fields. The additional required concentration prepares students to become competent in the area of agriculture most exciting to them.
There is no one typical Agricultural Sciences student and learners engage in interdisciplinary settings through common coursework. In collaboration with our diverse student ambassadors, the major offers student-led programming to enhance our sense of community. Industry and alumni guests lead discussions and offer professional development advice as part of our skill development/training. Unique opportunities that enrich practical experience are plentiful from undergraduate research, outreach, and study abroad, to wide-ranging internships.
